Authentic Adventure, Tribal Culture and Pristine Landscapes
The most far-flung, eastern province of Indonesian, Papua (formerly Irian Jaya) has a reputation for its mysterious and exotic landscapes and people. In many areas, modernity has barely impacted – a journey to Papua is definitely a road less travelled. Impenetrable jungles, immense valleys and snowcapped mountains are home to ancient tribal cultures and extraordinary flora and fauna. Of Melanesian origin, the people of Papua are now mainly subsistence farmers with more than 200 different tribes, each with their own beliefs, traditions, customs and languages. The Baliem valley is the gateway to exploring these tribal cultures as well as the stunning wilderness of Papua. A spectacular array of flora and fauna - tree kangaroos, wallabies and the fantastically colourful Birds of Paradise are just a few of the species to be found. On the northwestern tip of Papua lie the islands of Raja Ampat - hundreds of tiny islets surround the “Four Kings” - Misool, Salawati , Batanta and Waigeo islands. Widely recognized as having the world’s highest marine biodiversity, this area with its rich coral reefs and creatures of all shapes and sizes, offers incredible diving and snorkeling.
